The National Weather Service (NWS) has developed a technique for verifying the algorithm used with radiosondes for applying radiation corrections to temperature measurements. Both solar and infra-red corrections are applied to temperature measurements, but the solar correction has the greatest effect, especially in the stratosphere. However, the algorithm within either government-furnished or vendor-furnished software must be validated to ensure the corrections are being applied properly as a function of time of day, latitude, and solar angle. This paper will delineate the technique used by the NWS to validate the solar radiation correction.
