A New Data Assimilation Technique for Satellite Derived Winds
In a joint effort between the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Environmental Modeling Center (EMC), the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) Office of Research and Applications (ORA) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), a new satellite derived wind assimilation technique is being tested for use in the Eta Data Assimilation/ Forecast System (EDAS). The new technique allows a layer to be adjusted to the wind observation while also compensating for model-observation height assignment bias. The GOES infrared (IR) and water vapor (WV) cloud drift winds currently being assimilated by the EDAS are being tested. The GOES clear air WV and GOES high density low level visible winds are also being tested for potential assimilation by the EDAS.
