Teaching Oceanography in a K–6 Classroom
This past year I have had two new experiences to learn about Oceanography: the NOAA's Teacher
at Sea Program and the American Meteorological Society's Maury Project.. Both afforded new
opportunities to provide new science activities that I have adapted for students in grades K -
6. The poster display will include charts and photos from both experiences, including both
shipboard and classroom activities Examples include pictures of local university students
guiding children through activities on waves, tides, water density and wind will be displayed.
In addition to a display of my summer experiences, I will also make handouts available for
hands-on exercises that coincide with The Voyage of the Mimi; internet webquests; language arts
(vocabulary, poetry, literature); knot tying; sonar soundings; and weather. While the focus
will be on science activities, the beauty of the ocean is that it provides opportunities to
cross disciplines to promote learning in a variety of subject areas.
