Moisture comparisons using AIRS, GPS, and radiosondes
Larry M. McMillin, NOAA/NESDIS, Camp Springs, MD
The AIRS instrument has numerous channels that respond to moisture. During the vlaidation phase, AIRS data will be matched with radiosondes. When a radiosonde station is close to a GPS ground based moisture observation, the GPS moisure value will be matched as well giving a 3 way match between the AIRS, GPS and radiosnde for total water vapor. The plan is to use the total water vapor from the GPS to screen/adjust the radiosonde moisture to match the GPS total water vapor before using the radiosonde data to validate the AIRS measurements. This 3-way match will provide an opportunity to compare the 3 sources. Since radiosonde types at sites differ, the satellite and GPS data will be used to dtermine biases between radiosonde types. Results from these comparisons will be shown.
