Coastal ocean modeling is one of the broadest and most complex scientific endeavors involving aspects of oceanography, engineering, physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and management. As we improve our understanding of complex coastal areas, the availability of qualified personnel to support modeling, observational systems, data assimilation and information management may soon become the limiting factor in our ability to transition oceanographic research into applications. Recent progress in forecasting coastal processes will be discussed with emphasis on human resource needs for basic research, development and operations.
