Teaching Aviation Students Weather Using Online Weather Studies
Polly D. Steenhagen, Delaware State University, Dover, DE
Approximately 20% of general aviation accidents are caused by weather or are at least weather-related, according to the Air Safety Foundation Nall Report. Most of these accidents are fatal. Understanding weather theory and learning how to interpret weather forecasts and in-flight weather are therefore important skills and knowledge for a pilot to acquire. This study examines freshmen airway science students in their first semester at Delaware State University as they learn weather though the Online Weather Studies course and begin their flight training. The utility of the course for budding pilots is analyzed. Additions to the course and the website for students learning aviation weather are suggested.
