Breaking the Digital Divide with the AMS Online Meteorology Program
Passaic County Community College is a two-year institution serving the County of Passaic, one of the most diverse counties in the New York City Metropolitan area including New Jersey's third largest city, Paterson. In recent years the college has received several grants focusing on bridging what is known in this area as "The Digital Divide", the lack of computer equipment and computer skills for this low income diverse population.
The AMS meteorology course is very appealing to many of our diverse students. The use of computers for the course work has provided a vehicle for students to gain knowledge in using computers for a set purpose and for personnel gain. This has sparked the interest in technology for those students who otherwise would not be exposed.
My poster presentation will explore the avenues used to create and keep the students interest in science and technology even after the AMS course is completed. Through the use of my Apple laptop computer with video editing capabilities I will display students using the technology and visitors will see and hear testimonials of how the AMS course broke the Digital Divide for them.
