On the Origin of Monsoon

Winston C. Chao, NASA/GSFC, Greenbelt, MD; and B. Chen

A mechanism that determines whether a single or a double ITCZ appears in an aqua-planet model is proposed. Two major factors in this mechanism are earth’s rotation and SST peak in the latitudinal direction. Numerical experiments using an aqua-planet GCM supporting this proposed mechanism will be presented. This mechanism also explains the difference in monsoon onset process in the model when different convection schemes are used.
