The WWRP/TMRP International Tropical Cyclone Landfall Program (ITCLP)
Greg J. Holland, BMRC, Melbourne, Vic., Australia
Great challenges exist for improving the prediction of processes occurring during tropical cyclone landfall. There are also considerable opportunities for better observations, understanding, and predictive techniques. These issues have led the international community to develop an ITCLP with the following goals:
Improved specification of the rainfall and wind field occurring both at the coast and inland as a cyclone makes landfall.
This will implicitly require improved track forecasts and will lead to improvements in secondary parameters, such as storm surge estimation. The program will be accompanied by surveys and assessment of the vulnerability of communities to tropical cyclones, together with research into improved disaster mitigation options. The poster will describe the research and forecast aims, together with the close interactions that are expected to occur with the USWRP Landfalling efforts.
