Intraseasonal and Interannual Modulation of Westerly Wind Bursts
Leslie M. Hartten, CIRES, University of Colorado and NOAA/AL, Boulder, CO
A consistently applied objective definition has been used to identify all westerly wind bursts (WWBs) during the 1980's. This presentation will use an outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) dataset that has been filtered to extract the signal associated with the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) to address the issue of the relationship between the synoptic-scale WWBs and the larger-scale MJO. The analysis may be extended into the 1990's, and will also include a discussion of the interannual variability of WWBs.
