The statistical correlation between Sahel rainfall and ENSO variability has increased since 1970. This has been concomitant with a decrease of the connection between the tropical Atlantic SST dipole and Sahel rainfall. The characteristics of the relationship between West African rainfall and ENSO are investigated with the NCEP/NCAR reanalyses over the period 1968-1997.
