MESONET FROM CLASSROOM TO COMMUNITY

Lori R. Painter, Monroe Elementary School, Enid, OK; and G. Ratzlaff

Hi my name is Gregg Ratzlaff. I was a sixth grader in Mrs. Painter class at Monroe Elementary, Enid, OK in 1998. Before I had access to the Oklahoma Mesonet I only was interested weather when I wanted to go the the lake. Now, because of the Mesonet, I love to watch and study the weather. In fact, it has made me want to become a meteorologist. I had the chance to be a Monroe Elementary Meteorologist and do the weekend forecast for Mix96 a local radio station. I also was a member of the Garfield County Jr. Emergency Management team and responsible for monitoring where the dryline was. I helped make a forecast and faxed a Mesonet map with the dryline to the head of the Garfield County Emergency Management office.
Now I understand the weather. I think that every child should have a Mesonet experience because I think they would have fun while learning weather, math, geography , and people skills. I think I will use the knowledge gained using the Mesonet not only in school but throughout my whole life!
Look for me in the future as a Meteorologist for the National Weather Service or CBS!
