COMET CASE STUDY ACCESS AND BEYOND

Linda Miller, Boulder, CO; and E. Davis

Through a collaborative arrangement being funded by the National Weather Service/Office of Meteorology (NWS/OM), Unidata has been working to make COMET case studies accessible through the WWW interface to the CODIAC data base management system. Case studies have been loaded into the system to provide general access to a broader audience of case study users.

The Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training (COMET) has been creating a library of case studies for use in research, training and education activities. Making the case studies available through CODIAC, a system managed by the Joint Office of Science Support (JOSS), enables users to search, browse, and order individual data sets from each case study. Supporting documentation and sample exercises are included to give examples of how the case studies can be used in various settings.

Unidata conducted a survey of COMET case study users last spring, 1998. One idea that was widely supported was to create a central web site linking to community developed hydro-meteorological case studies. To accommodate this concept, Unidata created a "Case Studies of Interest" web site for case studies that have been developed by academia, NOAA/NWS, and others interested in sharing their case studies. This site provides links to a diverse set of resources with descriptions and examples of phenomena ranging from local to national scale
