AWIPS CENTRALIZED USER TRAININ: OPERATIONS AND SYSTEM MANAGEMENT

Corey A. Lefkof, Litton/PRC Inc, McLean, VA

An essential piece of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) deployment, the Centralized User Training (CUT) is the conduit for AWIPS system manager information. Focused on those individuals such as the Electronic Systems Analyst (ESA), the Scientific Operations Officer (SOO), the Development and Operations Hydrologist (DOH), and the AWIPS Focal Point (AFP) who must operate and maintain the AWIPS system at the site, an AWIPS CUT class is conducted by Litton-PRC staff every 2 weeks at the National Weather Service's Training Center located in Kansas City, Missouri.

The AWIPS CUT covers daily operation and maintenance of an AWIPS. The students become familiar with the AWIPS architecture, software packages, and procedures on how to diagnose problems with the system. Using a proven guided-demonstration, hands-on paradigm, the course allows all students to apply in the laboratory what they learned in lecture.

The AWIPS CUT is an 8-day course on system operations, management, and coordination. The first 1.5 days cover the use of the AWIPS workstation and the remaining 6.5 days are focused on system management training. The final 1.5 days of the system management section concentrate on real-event troubleshooting in a controlled environment. The students must apply the information covered in the previous 6.5 days in solving the real-time, real-event scenarios.

The AWIPS CUT enables the site system managers to understand how the system works and apply that knowledge to daily operations and maintenance of the system.

This year PRC will upgrade the presentation to include video clips of the CUT classes
