AWIPS ON-SITE USER TRAINING

Matthew Kensey, PRC Inc, McLean, VA

AWIPS is the last part of the National Weather Service Modernization Program to be rolled out. Designed to consolidate the many weather data sources and functions into a single workstation; once AWIPS is installed, the staff at the Weather Forecast Offices, River Forecast Centers, and National Centers needs to rapidly become proficient in the operation of the AWIPS workstation. Knowledge of how the On-Site User Training (OUT) course is conducted, the course topics, the course flow, and the customization possibilities can help you plan for the AWIPS training at your site.

The AWIPS OUT course is designed to rapidly train the operational staff in the use of the AWIPS workstation for retrieval/creation of weather data and products. The training uses a proven guided-demonstration, hands-on training paradigm. Repeated over a five-day period by Litton-PRC staff, the training covers all aspects of the AWIPS workstation from the forecaster point of view. The training may be customized for non-forecasters, who also need to know AWIPS.

This presentation is an update on the status of AWIPS training. We will augment our presentation with video that shows portions of the training as well as direct feedback from NWS users
