LIDAR-DERIVED ARCTIC CLOUD PROPERTIES AND RADIATION MEASUREMENTS DURING THE POLAR WINTER SEASON AT SHEBA

Janet M. Intrieri, NOAA/ETL, Boulder, CO; and C. W. Fairall and B. J. McCarty

Cloud observations obtained by the DABUL (Depolarization and Backscatter Unattended Lidar) system at SHEBA (Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean) are compared to IR radiometer measurements for the polar winter season. Lidar measurements of cloud-base height as well as the phase of the cloud combine to play an important role in the modification of the surface radiation during the dark season of polar winter
