FUTURE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION OPERATIONAL NEEDS FOR WSR-88D ARCHITECTURE

Mariea Tavenner, FAA, Washington, DC; and C. Vaccarella and C. J. Tidwell, Jr

The purpose of this paper is to identify the future FAA needs and areas of research needed to meet them. The FAA has some future needs that cannot be met by the current WSR-88D. These needs have been identified through the Transporation Aviation Safety Database, use of the current WSR-88D data, and inputs from controllers. To meet these needs will require the WSR-88D be upgraded to the Open System architecture, which is currently being accomplished, with some additional hardward modifications to the RDA. To meet these future FAA needs will also require research to define the science necessary for the development of new algorithms and products
