AVIATION WEATHER PRODUCTS AS SEEN BY AN ENGINEER

Arthur Levy, FAA, Washington, DC; and C. J. Tidwell, Jr

Weather detection and warning plays an important role in aviation safety and efficiency. To determine what is needed to combine these two, sometimes at odds, requires open communications between the engineer and the end users. This communications is hampered by a lack of understanding on everyone’s part. The controllers nor pilots are normally not meteorologist and therefore do not understand the limitations of what can be provided. Further, most users do not understand how to state their needs where the engineer can convert it into equipment that can satisfy them. The engineer, on the other hand, wants to develop the system that will do everything for everyone whether there is a validated need or not. This paper discusses some of the differences that exist between these two groups and how this problem can be reduced
