THE ROLE OF DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR IN NOAA'S FUTURE OBSERVING SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

Frederick Toepfer, NOAA/NWS, Silver Spring, MD; and R. Saffle

With the completion of the nationwide WSR-88D network and the nationwide installation of FAA's Terminal Doppler Weather Radars, it's time to think about the role Doppler weather radar might play as an integral component of an Integrated Mesoscale Observing System. This paper reviews the long range planning currently underway within NOAA, for defining more concretely the role of Doppler Weather Radar in the future observing system architecture, and concepts for the integrated use of the data. The key elements of a possible long range strategy along with the scientific and other issues and questions that must be addressed are presented.
