In 1999 the National Weather Service (NWS) expects to complete deployment of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) and begin deployment of the WSR-88D Open Radar Product Generator (ORPG). AWIPS will replace the Principal User Processor (PUP) as the primary tool for the display and analysis of radar data in the forecast process. The combination of the ORPG and AWIPS on a common local network will enhance the ability of the ORPG to acquire data for the development of new algorithms and will provide AWIPS with greater accessability to radar products for display. These two systems will continue to evolve to enhance the unique, complementary capabilities of each. This paper describes proposals for functional enhancements for early ORPG builds, the philosophy for integrated use of the ORPG and AWIPS, and a process for ensuring a good partnership between field offices and NWS Headquarters in the evolution of AWIPS and ORPG capabilities
