WORLD WEATHER WATCH (WWW) WORK STATIONS FOR THE NEXT DECADE

Robert C. Landis, Geneva, Switzerland

The National Meteorological Services in the 185 WMO Members are largely dependent on the Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) Guidance from Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres (RSMCs) and data from a constellation of 3 polar orbiting and 6 geostationary orbiting satellites to prepare national forecast and warnings. An investigation of the evolution of workstation requirements into the next decade is made based on an expected increase in desk top computational and telecommunication capacity as well as improvements in NWP output. Standards within the WWW clearly indicate the need for merger of NWP and satellite data, higher resolution local area and meso-scale models, and new application tools for enhanced weather services to users
