The Eleventh Meeting of the Heads and Chairs of Departments of Atmospheric, Oceanic, Hydrologic, and Related Sciences was held at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) on 8-9 October, 1998. The meeting was sponsored by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Science (UCAR). The general theme of the meeting was the preparation of, and career opportunities for, atmospheric science students. The meeting opened with a series of reports from several federal agencies regarding funding opportunities for undergraduate and graduate education. Also on the agenda were reports from Unidata, Comet, and PAGE outlining current and future activities. Summary reports of recent workshops and short courses for faculty were also provided. An updated AMS Statement on the Undergraduate Degree in Meteorology/Atmospheric Science was approved. Two special sessions were held. The first session dealt with AMS goals regarding education, and the second session was a panel discussion on the changing job market for atmospheric science students
