AUTOMATIC LORAN-C CHAIN SELECTION

Juhana Jaatinen, Vaisala Oy, Helsinki, Finland; and J. Åkerberg

This paper introduces automatic Loran-C chain selection, the latest development in Vaisala Loran-C receiver. The new receiver increases operational reliability and simplifies operators work at the synoptic station. Before each launch, the receiver synchronizes to four predefined chains and selects be the best combination of two chains for the sounding. The selection is based on sounding geometry and the number of available Loran-C transmitters. This new feature enhances operational capability during Loran-C service breaks and when using chains outside their coverage area
