JOINT METOC VIEWER IMAGE FORMAT

Charles E. Skupniewicz, FNMOC, Monterey, CA; and D. Huff

The Joint METOC Viewer (JMV) is a desktop client program developed by the Navy, which displays a wide variety of meteorological and oceanographic data and model fields. Coupled with the METCAST client-server data retrieval software, the JMV client is provided the latest possible data without user interaction. An image format is described which allows JMV to navigate and quantify satellite images. This allows the viewer to overlay geography and model fields onto the imagery, plot color bars in geophysical units, and display other quantitative information about the imaged data. This format is being adopted by Navy satellite receiving stations worldwide to supply the JMV customer with global coverage from a wide range of meteorological satellites. A real time demonstration of the imaging features of the viewer will be given.
