RECENT DEVELOPMENTS AND PLANS FOR THE FAA'S AUTOMATED WEATHER OBSERVING PROGRAM

This paper describes the current status and future plans for the automated observing systems providing weather observations to aviation users. Included is the status of the Federal and nonfederal Automated Weather Observing Systems (AWOS) and the National Weather Service/Federal Aviation Administration Automated Surface Observing Systems (ASOS). Recent enhancements in the Automated Lightning Detection and Reporting System (ALDARS) and a variety of communications capabilities are also presented
