USING NODDS AND JOINT METOC VIEWER IN THE CLASSROOM: A COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

Carl D. Thormeyer, FNMOC, Monterey, CA; and D. R. Gerrard and W. Schmidt

The Navy Oceanographic Data Distribution System (NODDS) and Joint METOC Viewer (JMV)were developed to allow military customers a PC display capability anywhere in the world with minimum investment and existing communications access. The continuing development of NODDS, a dial-up system using commercial and government phone lines, has been described at several recent IIPS conferences. JMV, an internet-based display capability, was first described at the 13th IIPS conference. Recently, Fleet Numerical established a partnership with a local Middle School, and is installing NODDS and JMV in that school's science labs. Tailored downloads using these display capabilities will then be integrated into the weather and oceanography segments of the school's science curriculum, thereby augmenting the existing "Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE)" program at that school
