"HOW'S THE WEATHER?" - RESOURCES FOR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE-SCHOOL METEOROLOGY CURRICULA

A series of six books on various aspects of meteorology has recently been completed. Geared toward middle-school kids, the books are also being used in elementary and high schools. The books are designed to be used either individually or as a set. Highlights from each of the book will be shown in the poster, including activities and suggestions for relevant curricula. Titles in the series are:

Weatherwise: Learning About the Weather.
General background on air, sunlight, the seasons, water, clouds, rain and snow, pressure systems and fronts, storms and weather forecasting.

Wet Weather: Rain Showers and Snowfall.
Water and the hydrologic cycle, formation of rain and snow, precipitation measurement and forecasting, floods, blizzards and droughts.

Storm Warning: Tornadoes and Hurricanes
Tornadoes and hurricanes: their formation, movement and effect on people.

Thunderbolt: Learning about Lightning
Thunderstorms and lightning; types of lightning, damage, and safety precautions.

Weather Watch: Forecasting the Weather:
Weather basics, sky watching, reading weather maps, professional forecasting, building a homemade weather station.

Hazy Skies: Weather and the Environment
Air pollution through history; effects on animals, people and the environment; the role of weather; acid rain; ozone destruction; global warming.
