DEVELOPMENT OF A PROTOTYPE AWIPS OPERATIONAL DATA REPOSITORY AND CASE REVIEW SYSTEM

NOAAPORT, the operational national data stream for AWIPS, comprises the national satellite, model output, and observational datasets. For research and training purposes, NOAAPORT data and metadata must be archived, combined with AWIPS local datasets, and processed into case reviews and research datasets. The resultant case reviews and datasets will be used by operational forecasters, and the university community and researchers for training purposes and the research of weather phenomena.

This paper will describe the prototype data repository and case review system that is being developed at the Forecast Systems Laboratory. Three factors place FSL in the unique position to develop this prototype: its long-term access to the complete NOAAPORT data stream, its experience saving data for research purposes, and its familiarity with the WFO-Advanced software, the selected workstation software for AWIPS. After this system is developed, the intent is that it will be transferred to an operational component of NOAA, such as the NWS or NESDIS, as has been done with WFO-Advanced and AWIPS.
