THE ROLE OF WEATHER TRAINING IN FLIGHT OPERATIONS

Jim Foerster, DTN Kavouras Weather Services, Burnsville, MN

The role of Aircraft Dispatcher (AD) in today's (regional, commuter) airline is more critical than ever before. Faced with increasing responsibilities and duties, the AD requires both easy access to key weather information as well as a complete understanding of how to best use and apply that information. Dramatic and fast-paced changes are underway in aviation meteorology bringing new technology and more advanced tools to the dispatcher, required detailed custom training programs to be developed and implemented. From initial, in-depth training to more streamlined, recurrent training, these needs will continue to increase into the next century as more research is done on critical factors such as icing and turbulence. Formal training programs, with clear and concise supporting materials, will allow the AD to focus on specific tools and maximize both safety and productivity
