WEATHER ANALYSIS AND DISPLAY SYSTEM - VERSION 6.1

William M. Purcell, Environment Canada, Winnipeg, Canada

The Weather Analysis Display System or WADS is interactive software in use at many forecast offices in Canada including the Prairie Storm Prediction Centre in Winnipeg. The system was first developed in 1991 as a display system for presenting meteorological information to the meteorologist in a variety of ways. Since then, the software has been redesigned on a number of occasions to incorporate additional data sources and features. The current version of the software allows the meteorologist to use current or forecast displays of data. The information available to the system in Canada currently includes surface observations, upper air data, numerical model GRIB (gridded) data, radar and satellite imagery, lightning strike data, evapotranspiration model output, and radar decision support system cell information. The data fields may be displayed independently or concurrently to assist meteorologists in making timely and accurate forecast decisions. Significant Weather Meteorologists with the Canadian Prairie Storm Prediction Centre use WADS to identify significant weather threat areas, and to issue, update and/or end watches and warnings as appropriate. The system incorporates a number of chart annotation and drawing features, and is also used to generate prognosis and severe weather workup charts. This system continues to develop and improve while in use in the operational field. Many enhancements have appeared in the this system due to direct and immediate user feedback and consultation.
