NONLINEAR BALANCE APPROXIMATIONS FOR LARGE ROSSBY NUMBER FLOWS

John A. Knox, Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN

This work extends to large Rossby numbers the results of McWilliams and Gent (1980, Appendix D), who examined intermediate balance models in a gradient-flow context. Apparently new approximations have been derived which yield accurate solutions at both large cyclonic and anticyclonic Rossby numbers. The limiting case of strong anticyclonic flows, for which quasi-geostrophy and semi-geostrophy are equally inaccurate, is highlighted. The implications of this work for the development of intermediate models appropriate for less restrictive flow configurations are also examined.
