RADIATION AND LOCALISATION OF PLANETARY WAVES IN A FLUCTUATING ATMOSPHERE: OBSERVATIONS

Lionel Pandolfo, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada; and A. H. Monahan

The objectives of this study are three-fold. Firstly, we describe the spatial characteristics of energy propagation for tropospheric quasi-stationary waves. Secondly, we relate these characteristics of propagation to particular statistics of the winds high-frequency variability. Thirdly, we propose a dynamical mechanism through which wind variability focuses the propagation of wave energy into distinct atmospheric waveguides. Our results suggest that for quasi-stationary tropospheric waves, the spatial and temporal fluctuations of the medium through which the waves propagate cannot be neglected when computing wave energy dispersion.
