CONSTRAINING THE DYNAMICS OF ENSO USING LINEAR INVERSE MODELING

Joseph Barsugli, NOAA/CDC and Univ. of Colorado, CIRES, Boulder, CO; and M. C. Penland and P. Chang

From linear inverse modeling (LIM) of observed tropical sea surface temperatures we can obtain a linear approximation of the dynamical operator governing the evolution of SSTs. The properties of this operator are investigated in physical space, and regionally averaged operators are constructed. Output from an intermediate coupled model of ENSO with various physical processes removed is similarly analyzed. In this manner we attempt to connect the empirical LIM approach to process-based dynamical modeling of ENSO.
