Trends in maximum, minimum, and average temperature, and the diurnal temperature range were determined for the 1950 through 1996 interval for three land use/cover designations for the over 1200 weather observation stations that comprise the U.S. Historical Climatology Network. The stations were designated as urban, suburban, or rural based on data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program-Operational Linescan System. These general categories of land use/cover appear to be one of the factors that can influence the trends observed in temperature records.
