25-year record of mass balance of Echaurren Glacier, central Chile, and its relation with ENSO events

Fernando Escobar, Direccion General de Aguas, Ministerio de Obras Publicas, Santiago, Chile; and G. Casassa and C. Garin

. Mass balance results of Echaurren Glacier, central Chile, are presented for the period 1975-1999. Glaciar Echaurren is a small glacier of 0.4 km2, located at a mean elevation of 3750 m, 33º33' Lat. S, 70º08' Long. W, 50 km east of Santiago. Measurements have been carried out continuosly in different epochs each year by Direccion General de Aguas. No clear long-term variation of net mass balance can be appreciated during the period. However, a strong relation of annual glacier mass balance with ENSO events can be observed
