.We will review the characteristics of the 50-year NCEP/NCAR reanalysis most relevant to the SH, namely those related to changes in the observing systems, and their implications for the reliability of the reanalysis. In addition, we will present a preliminary analysis of the regional and seasonal predictability characteristics based on the 8-day forecasts performed every 5 days, and compare them with operational NCEP forecasts
