Attenuation of Scalar Fluxes Measured with Horizontally-Displaced Sensors

T. W. Horst, NCAR, Boulder, CO

The HATS (Horizontal Array Turbulence Study) data set is used to examine attenuation of scalar fluxes that are measured with horizontally-displaced scalar and vertical velocity sensors. A simple attenuation formula is presented that encompasses a wide range of wind direction, stratification, and the ratio of sensor displacement to measurement height. This formula is compared to recent work by Lee and Black (1994) and Kristensen et al. (1997) and is recommended for correction of measured fluxes.
