THE INTERNET AS A SOURCE OF AVIATION WEATHER

Michael A. Steinberg, AccuWeather, Inc, State College, PA

With the explosion of weather information available through Internet access, aviation meteorologists and pilots are increasingly turning to the Internet for weather information.

This paper examines available sources of aviation weather on the Internet, including those from government, universities and the private sector. Although most sites offer free access, subscription sites will also be included along with a listing of their fees.

A list of site URLs will be presented with a comparison of content, update frequency and timeliness of available Internet aviation weather sources.

Special attention will be paid to capabilities such as online flight filing, flight planning, and availability and timeliness of the full spectrum of NEXRAD Doppler radar products.

Online examinations of many sites will be included in the presentation of the paper, to illustrate available aviation weather products, as well as the speed and ease of access.
