FREQUENCY OF TYPHOON LANDFALL OVER SOUTH CHINA DURING THE PERIOD 1470-1931

Johnny C L. Chan, City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon, ; and J. E. Shi

Based on reports from governments of different counties within Guangdong Province of South China, the frequency of typhoon landfall during the period 1470-1931 is analyzed. It is assumed that only strong typhoons were recorded because these were the ones that brought about damage severe enough to be recorded by the various local governments.
Analyses using various time-series analysis tools give consistent results. Specifically, oscillations with periods of 30-60 years and around 200 years are quite prominent. A rising trend can also be identified. These results will be discussed in detail at the conference and compared with previous studies by other researchers.
