Description:
Lightning is a significant hazard to airport operations and range missions, threatening lives and potential damage to high-value resources. This threat is so concerning that many airlines and airports, as well as range facilities, operate under lightning safety guidelines and protocols. Still, challenges in both observing and anticipating lightning activity, as well as optimizing safety protocols for this hazard, persist.
This session invites papers which present advancements in observing, predicting, and informing lightning safety hazards for airport and range operations. This includes the potential use of ancillary or alternative atmospheric data, modeling approaches, risk characterization considerations, and decision support guidance to improve lightning safety at these locations.
