NOAA’s Satellite and Information Service (NESDIS) performed a Ground Enterprise Study (NGES) to identify the most capable and cost-effective ground architecture(s) for NESDIS to invest in for near-, mid-, and long-term success of its mission. NGES addressed the full range of NESDIS ground operations including:
- Satellite Operations – addressing flight operations and space-ground communications,
- Data Operations – addressing product generation and data distribution, and
- Science Operations – addressing algorithm management, environmental information services, and archive.
The NESDIS Ground Enterprise CONOPS is being developed to describe the future enterprise architecture and how stakeholders will implement and utilize it. To ensure coordination and planning at the enterprise level as NESDIS enters the implementation phase, the Ground Enterprise Engineering team is working across the NESDIS offices and programs to develop the CONOPS and plan the migration from the current stove-piped architecture to an integrated NESDIS Ground Enterprise (NGE) architecture. As such, the CONOPS is intended to be a living document that will evolve as necessary.
The author will review the key elements of the NGE CONOPS and discuss how it will be used moving forward.
