Lightweight and compact sensor systems have enabled affordable observations of the near surface atmosphere using kites as lifting platforms. Numerous systems have been created and deployed in a variety of experiments, including imaging, wind/temperature/humidity profiling, and other in-situ measurements. The Advancing Earth Research Observation Kites with Atmospheric and Terrestrial Sensors (AEROKATS) project is intended to provide a practical method for users across multiple interests and skill levels. An overview of selected instruments, platforms, and participants will be presented.
