In spring 2024, GOES-U will launch to replace GOES-16, which has been operational for 7 years as GOES-East. GOES-18 has been in orbit since spring 2022 and is operational as GOES-West since early 2023. Continuous monitoring of severe weather, tracking of hazards, and other meteorological phenomena is observed by GOES satellites. The ABI instrument on the operational GOES satellites is used to create Level 2 products in real time within the Ground System (GS). Our group, the Product & Algorithm Science Support (PASS) team, works directly on the GS Development Environment (DE) to develop software installation packages. PASS focuses on the following major tasks for the ABI Level 2 algorithms: (1) updating to Enterprise versions of the algorithms, (2) adding new algorithms to improve existing products and add new ones. Updates are tested in the DE with live ABI data; however, the Algorithm WorkBench (AWB) can be utilized for offline playback of captured ABI data. After testing, the algorithm packages are sent for approval to be installed on the GS Operational Environment (OE).
We will show the interdependencies of the new algorithms since they have changed with the implementation of the new Enterprise versions. We will discuss new algorithms that were or will be implemented on the GS providing new products/algorithms such as Cloud Cover Layers, Photosynthetically Active Radiation, and Cloud Optical Depth. With all these updates and new product additions, the GOES Level 2 products become a richer dataset for all users and researchers.
