Indicators—observations and measurements used to track environmental conditions, trends, and impacts—are featured throughout the Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5), providing foundational information for evaluating observed climate-related changes. For the first time, the report also includes an Indicators Appendix containing indicators designed to support the various regional chapters and national topics.
This poster outlines the importance and utility of indicators in NCA5, including the Appendix, which comprises both new and existing indicators created and supported by federal agencies. Indicators in the Appendix are grouped into six categories (Atmosphere; Ice, Snow and Water; Ocean and Coastal; Land and Ecosystems; Health; Adaptation and Mitigation). Such indicators can be used to help communities assess risks and make informed decisions in response to a changing climate.
