This is the fifth year of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Pilot Report (PIREP) Modernization Strategic Plan and Roadmap task, which was triggered by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation of PIREP submission and dissemination, as well as the inclusion of PIREPs on the FAA Top 5 Safety Hazards list. The FAA Program Management Organization’s Aviation Weather and Aeronautical Services Programs group tasked MITRE to develop a strategic plan and roadmap for PIREP modernization in the National Airspace System (NAS). This poster describes the efforts and progress in FY23 for the strategic plan and roadmap for PIREP modernization in the NAS as well as the series of engagements within FAA to socialize and adopt the plan. This poster will focus on 1) progress of the PIREP Modernization Strategic Plan and 2) MITRE research and development capabilities involving a) exploration of the PIREP Smart Solicitation concept and b) advances in the Synthetic PIREPs process, which converts air traffic controller – pilot radio communications containing in-situ weather information into a PIREP. An updated PIREP modernization roadmap will also be presented, which includes incremental phases for implementing select PIREP system enhancements.
