The northern hemispheric surface air temperature and atmospheric circulation trend patterns during June-August have been shown to be related to each other. Recent research has suggested that these trend patterns are not one pattern, but instead the manifestation of changes in many patterns. One planetary-scale wave pattern in particular has occurred with increasing frequency since the late 1990s. This pattern is explored in further detail to understand the cause and if there is any possible predictability associated with it.
