Red Hat Hyperconverged Infrastructure (RHHI) has been the backbone of the virtualization system for the Advance Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) platform for several years. However, Red Hat is ending support on RHHI in the Fall of 2024. Red Hat’s Openshift Container Platform (OCP) represents the next generation Platform as a Service (PaaS) that supports both on premise compute and storage resources, as well as cloud resources. And while OCP is a system for managing container based applications, their Virtualization operator (OCP-Virt) extends the platform to run and manage full virtual machines in an OCP container environment.
This presentation will discuss the transition from RHHI to OCP-Virt on AWIPS, how OCP will improve the security, stability, monitoring and maintenance activities on AWIPS, and how OCP might be used to help the National Weather Service on their cloud journey.
