Description:
The Global Atmospheric Research Program's Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) was a pioneering international research effort aimed at advancing our understanding of the dynamics of tropical weather systems. Launched in 1974, GATE was a landmark effort that laid the foundation for the subsequent advancements in tropical meteorology. This session will celebrate 50 years of GATE and its lasting impact on the field of meteorology.
We welcome talks that:
- Summarize the key findings and advancements that emerged from GATE as well as the ongoing relevance of these lessons for modern-day meteorology
- Highlight the key accomplishments of GATE, including the development of new techniques for observing and forecasting tropical weather systems, and the refinement of our understanding of the dynamics of the atmosphere-ocean interface.
- Discuss the challenges faced during the GATE experiment and how they were overcome
- Discuss the ways in which GATE paved the way for future scientific collaborations and international partnerships.
This session is a must-attend for anyone interested in the history of meteorology, and for those who want to learn about the pivotal role that GATE played in advancing our understanding of tropical weather systems.
