Session Tropical Pacific and Indian Ocean Observing Needs and Prospects

Description:

Recent efforts including the Tropical Pacific Observing System 2020 (TPOS2020) project and CLIVAR Tropical Pacific Observing Needs (TPON) workshop have helped to identify process study observations and observation strategies most needed to advance understanding and rapidly improve model representations of multiscale ocean-atmosphere interactions. This session aims to highlight the findings of these efforts, and to facilitate community discussion of more broad Tropical Indian and Pacific Ocean observing needs and prospects. We encourage presentations covering a broad range of topics, including observational strategies, observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs), current observational needs and capabilities, emerging observational technologies, lessons learned from historical observational efforts, budget analyzes to advance our understanding of the complex coupling and scale interactions, and process studies to support prediction systems for ocean, weather, and climate services. We encourage, but do not require, presentations to provide additional context relating observational needs and prospects to the MJO and subseasonal variability.
