Session Digital Tools for Thriving Communities: Charting Environmental Health Solutions Across Scales

Description:

Extreme weather, chronic stressors like drought, and climate-driven health impacts threaten communities across local, regional, and global scales. This session proposes to bridge the gap between private, nonprofit, academic, and government sectors to accelerate the development and adoption of digital tools that build resilience and enhance public health within this dynamic risk landscape.

We will focus on the following key areas aligned with the 2025 AMS meeting theme:

  • Tools for local resilience: Showcase tools tailored to specific community vulnerabilities, from hyperlocal flood hazard mapping to personalized air quality alerts. Discuss co-production of knowledge with stakeholders to ensure solutions are actionable and equitable.
  • Regional collaboration and knowledge sharing: Explore tools facilitating cross-boundary management of water resources, early warning systems spanning large areas, and platforms for sharing best practices.
  • Data-driven global policy support: Highlight tools providing science-based insights for international climate and health negotiations. Emphasize tools visualizing risks across geopolitical boundaries and facilitating equitable resource allocation.
  • Integrating timescales: Examine how digital tools can seamlessly merge short-term weather forecasts with long-range climate projections and risk assessments. Promote tools supporting proactive adaptation instead of solely reactive responses.

This session will facilitate knowledge exchange and drive collaboration for practical digital solutions to problems experienced by individuals, organizations, and communities. We encourage submissions involving digital tools at all stages of development: idea, proof-of-concept, prototype, pilot implementation, and operational product. Success stories will illustrate how tools translate complex environmental data into actionable insights and strategies for communities of all scales. We will also foster discussion on workforce development initiatives to ensure a pipeline of skilled professionals equipped to design, deploy, and maintain these tools.

This session directly aligns with the AMS's mission of providing actionable science. It emphasizes building resilient communities at all scales, using digital tools that leverage weather, water, and climate data to promote a thriving planet.
